Aussie Gold Instructions:

Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix is made only from fresh water Diatomite imported from Australia, the finest coir fibre imported from Asia, horticultural charcoal and perlite, and some "secret" ingredients. It does not deteriorate and can be reused when you need to repot. It contains absolutely NO bark. Root rot is a constant problem with orchids. The ingredients in Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix are natural products and they do not cause decay to root system. The natural components of Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix encompass the following features:
  • Retain water to be released to the plant between waterings
  • Emit macro and micronutrients to the roots between feedings
  • Allow sufficient necessary air to the root system
  • Inert and reusable; sterile, pH neutral, non-toxic
  • Water as much as you want; you cannot over-water! Likes to be kept damp
  • It works great on miniature roses, epiphyllums, plumeria, bonsai and African violets too!
  1. Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix is ready to use, so pre-soaking is NOT necessary.

  2. Take the orchid to be repotted out of its pot, vigorously wash off any residue from the roots and trim off any dead or rotted roots. The roots are usually a fine thread surrounded by velamen. Healthy roots are plump and white with a green tip. Anything brown, black and dried up is dead and cannot be resurrected so should be removed. Do not be afraid to cut off dead roots, they are doing no good and can only lead to decay and rot, which is not conducive to a healthy plant!

  3. Soak the plant's remaining roots in a sterilizing agent for five minutes to eliminate the chance of transferring bacteria or other contaminants.

  4. Loosely pack the new or sterilized old pot with moist Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix, place the orchid back in the pot, and add more mix to fill. Compress slightly to ensure the plant is straight and will not move in transit. Remember, never place your orchid in full sun, as the leaves will start to burn. We recommend an orchid pot which allows additional aeration of the roots.

  5. Do not allow Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix to dry out completely. With Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix, you really cannot over-water your orchid, as the medium will hold the proper amount of water and expel the remainder. Frequency of watering depends on where you live, where you keep your orchid, what the air temperature is, and how much air movement the plant enjoys. A general rule is once a week in the winter and two or three times a week in the summer. However, if you live in a hot, dry area, you may need to water every day during very warm weather.

  6. The Diatomite in your Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix will release micronutrients to the roots of the plant to encourage healthy roots and trigger your orchid to produce new growth and blooms. However, you may wish to fertilize your orchid. This should be done with a dilute preparation of an orchid fertilizer of your choice, two or three times a month when you water. You can also apply a foliar spray at least once a week.

Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix has been created by orchid lovers for orchid lovers. We are so convinced that you and your orchid will be happy with Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix. Follow the above instructions, give your orchid the conditions that it requires and your plant will thrive.

If your Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix dries out completely, it is important to re-wet it thoroughly. This can be achieved by placing the pot in a dish of water for several hours to allow the moisture to be soaked up from bottom to top.

Grow in Aussie Gold Orchid Mix

Root rot is a constant problem when growing orchids, the causes of which are underwatering, overwatering and breakdown of the potting medium. All the ingredients in Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix are inert, which means that they will not deteriorate or cause decay to the root system. When orchids have healthy roots, they will get new growths and large, long-lasting flowers, and the plant will be less prone to infection. We recommend that you take a good look at the roots of any orchid as soon as you buy it, whether or not it is in bloom. Repotting your orchid immediately in Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix will lengthen the duration of the flowers. When you take your plant out of the pot, you are likely to find:

  • Dead and rotten roots
  • The original moss or other orchid medium in a matted clump in the center
  • Decayed and deteriorating orchid medium
  • Sometimes even a pot within a pot!
  • The new roots, hanging out of the pot searching for air, moisture and nourishment (because they couldn't find them inside the pot!)

Now look at the roots below on this dendrobium, grown in Aussie GoldŽ Orchid Mix in clear plastic glasses. All the roots are alive, healthy, in the pot and happy - AND it has been watered every day for over three years! [And yes, the glasses do have drainage holes!]
